break a leg

Usually said to a performer before a show, theatre play etc, meaning good luck. It comes from German: Hals-und Beinbruch (break your neck and legs), and was shortened to just the leg in English. Perhaps it exists because of an old show business superstition that wishing sb good luck might cause the opposite to happen. Wishing the performer bad luck would assure that the opposite would happen.
